Elements of design: alternatives to sculpture

What role, if any, has sculpture to play in modern gardens? Historically, of course, it has been a part of gardens – even the main part – from classical times through the Renaissance. Roman gardens were essentially stage sets where architecture effects were contrived and sculpture set everywhere to manifest the taste or wealth of the owner. Living things played architectural roles, clipped to form walls and arches or shaped into topiary obelisks, peacocks, pinecones, stags, and such. Plants thus became either vegetable masonry or statues in themselves. Renaissance gardeners borrowed these effects and set about either unearthing the buried statues or copying them to grace their parterres, terraces, allees, and fountains. In both cases, though urns and obelisks existed in abundance, it was the human form, idealized as gods and goddesses, that was most popular for garden ornamentation. Against such ornamentation plants played, perforce, a secondary role.

The great landscape gardens made in England by William Kent, Lancelot Brown, and Henry Hoare in the heart of the 18th century, though they generally eschewed the terraces, stairs, and long reflecting pools of the Italian style, retained statuary and architectural ornament. The sweeping lawns punctuated by natural groupings of trees, the picturesque cows held at an attractive distance by ha-has, the verdant woodland paths that invited the eye to distant mountaintops – all were contrived to refer the landscape back to nature, albeit a “nature methodized” (as Alexander Pope might put it) by a controlling human hand. Nevertheless, pictures of tranquil verdure were seen as just that, pictures, requiring a “point,” such as a temple, a ruined grotto, or an imposing statute. (more…)

Euthanasia: Murder or Trend

While thrash metal band Megadeth’s 1994 Youthanasia album ran up the charts and became their best selling album evoking a “countdown to extinction” imagery and mood among harried youths across the world. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The word “youthanasia” was obviously a reconstruction of the word “euthanasia,” which is the act of inducing a gentle, painless death.

Already the MDs and LLBs had woken up to licitly lend a helping hand for the sick and the crippled, sanctioning ‘liberty to die’-a direct sacrilege of the Hippocrates’ nursing, caring & healing oath which states “To please no one will I prescribe a deadly drug nor give advice which may cause his death” and a direct contravention to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution citing ‘the right to life’.

World Thalassemia Day – from awareness to prevention

To spread awareness for Thalassemia and to map the magnitude of the disease worldwide, 8th May is observed as World Thalassemia day.

Thalassemia is an inherited genetic disorder which results in fewer red blood cells and lesser hemoglobin in body than normal. This leads to anemia, whose severity depends on the type of mutation (genetic disorder). It is one of the most common genetic disorders around the globe.

As far as types of mutation are concerned there are 200 forms all over the world, out of which 26 are identified in India and among these also, five are observed most commonly. Unfortunately, these five types of mutation are distinguished as the most severe in nature compared to mutations found in other parts of world. Thus, naturally World Thalassemia Day holds more importance in Indian context, especially in terms of awareness.

“Apart from creating awareness among general public for the disease, World Thalassemia Day is also significant for making people understand that Thalassemia is preventable”, says Dr. V.K. Khanna, Senior Pediatrician, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. (more…)

Nurture the Nature

An unparalleled calamity is in the making. No, it is not just global warming. Increase in temperature is easy to record, document and debate about. Global emissions, far from decreasing, remain on a steep upward curve of almost exceptional growth. What goes unnoticed is the human effort to dismantle the planet and fiddle with biodiversity. Aren’t we relentlessly working to lay it waste?

E very year thousands of species vanish due to human activity. To take an example of 5743 known amphibian species, 43 percent are in decline, 32 percent are threatened, and 168 individual species are believed to be extinct. The twenty-first century could witness a biodiversity collapse – 100 to 1,000 times greater than any previous extinction since the dawn of humanity, according to the World Resources Institute.
